Of all the musical genres that are around today, indie could well have the biggest impact on fashion and the clothes that its followers wear. Perhaps hip-hop and R n B could claim to have an equally large influence but there is no denying that whatever an indie legend wears on stage one week will be copied by hundreds of adoring fans the next. At times it seems that indie musicians are as close to being fashion models as they are musicians and for some people, there appears to be a cross over in functions.Kate Moss is More Indie Rock n' Roll than Most
Everyone has heard about Kate Moss and her relationship with Pete Doherty but there is something about the fashion icon that means she is unable to keep away from the boys in the band. The following are a list of musicians that Kate has been romantically linked with in her time:
o Peter Doherty - Libertines / Babyshambles
o Jamie Hince - The Kills, her current partner
o Evan Dando - The Lemonhead / solo artist
o Bobby Gillespie - Primal Scream
o Jesse Wood - various bands and son of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood
To her credit though, Kate has had an impact on the world of music and as well as singing on stag
e with Pete and Babyshambles from time to time, she shared vocals with Bobby Gillespie on Primal Screams 'Some Velvet Morning', a cover of the Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra classic. Models and rock stars have always been attracted to each other, it was the case long before Kate Moss arrived and it will be the case long after she is gone.
Kate isn't the Only One Who's Indie Fashion Forward
This has already been proven by Agyness Deyn, England's new alternative to Kate, who in the first half of 2008 lent her vocals to 'Who' by The Five O'clock Heroes. It was rumored at the time that Agyness was dating the lead singer of the band but she quickly progressed onto dating Fab from The Strokes. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with the comings and goings of these stars but the link between indie and fashion is getting stronger.
More pop based acts like Lily Allen may officially produce clothing ranges for retailers, but taking a look at stores like Topman or American Apparel will show clothes heavily influenced by the current stars of today. Whether it is Pete Doherty's classic 60s style, the Klaxons with their Nu-Rave gear or The Strokes with their skinny ties and suits, it has never been easier to dress like your favorite musician.
Sometimes Clothing does Make the Band
Although it should always be about the music, there is no doubt that how a band dresses can make them more appealing and certainly grab more attention. Even The Beatles owe some of their success to manager Brian Epstein and his decision to force them to ditch their leather look and replace it with a clean cut image. The Rolling Stones would indicate a change in musical direction through their fashion as much as their music and you have The White Stripes with their strict red, white or black clothing policy.
Whether the full band dresses in the same manner, such as Ladytron, to suggest a military and professional manner or each member is responsible for their own style, what a musician wears can make a difference to the reaction they get in the media or from fans. It makes no difference if it is Lovefoxx from CSS wearing a shiny cat suit or Amy Winehouse with her towering hair, having a look that makes you instantly recognizable is all the rage if you make music these days.
